Edith Marie (Oujesky) Hopkins, 91, of Pettus, died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2010. Mrs. Hopkins was born March 2, 1919, in Houston, to Joseph Elenor and Frances (Milburger) Oujesky. She married Orville Eugene "Buzz" Hopkins on Aug. 12, 1939, in Houston and was a homemaker and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She was the director of Head Start from 1959 to 1973, and a member of St. Vincent DePaul Society, Sacred Heart Altar Society, the Pettus Garden Club and was active in church activities. She enjoyed playing bridge and dominoes at the Pettus Senior Citizen Community Center. She was also known as the "Cake Lady" and "Easter Basket Lady". She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on Dec. 18, 2006; two brothers; and two sisters. Survivors include two sons, Morgan Joe (Betty) Hopkins of Porter and Orville Eugene "Pinky" (Carol) Hopkins of Spring; a daughter, Deborah Kay (Jerry) Mills of Pleasanton; a sister, Emily Ellison of Houston; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Visitation was held Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Galloway & Sons Chapel. A rosary was recited there that evening at 7 o'clock. The funeral Mass was celebrated Monday at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pettus with Father Joseph Varghese officiating. Musical selections by Roy Cox included "Ave Maria", "Amazing Grace", "How Great Thou Art" and "The Old Rugged Cross". Burial followed in Beeville Memorial Park.
