George Elzy McCarty, 103, of Pettus, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2017.
Mr. McCarty was born Oct. 2, 1914, in Pettus to Lura (Hodge) and Charlie McCarty. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a World War II veteran. He was also the caretaker at Ray Ranch and worked at First National Bank for more than 25 years.
He was a 70-year member of the American Legion, a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, a Masonic Lodge Shriner, a member of Pettus Volunteer Fire Department, Bee County Historical Society, Bee Cemetery Committee and St. Rose Cemetery Association. He served several organizations including South Texas Children's Home, Beeville Boys and Girls Club and South Texas Helping Hands Ministry of Pettus.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Leslie Bell, John Shelton, Willie Shelton, Riley F. McCarty, C.B. McCarty, Marvin McCarty, Ira McCarty and Hodges McCarty; and sisters, Larcy McCarty Miller, Lucille McCarty Odoms and Hester McCarty Clay.
Survivors include a son, Stanley Durst of Woodsboro; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13, at Bethlehem Baptist Church.
The funeral service will be conducted Saturday, Oct. 14, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church with Rev. Paul Wilkinson Sr. and Rev. Eric Tarver officiating. Burial will follow in Beeville Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Jesse Robinson, Edwin Wooten, Bobby Johnson, Harry McCarty, Falous McCarty and Larry McCarty.
Honorary pallbearers will be Clavon E. Gibson, John Thomas Earl Gibson IV, David Bernell Gibson, James Dailey, Darrell Dailey, Mark Greenwood, Jamie Greenwood, Chris Greenwood, James Kingston Jr. and Ramond Clay Jr.
