She grew up as a girl in South Texas with her siblings, where she spent her time riding horseback and attending grade school. On December 24th, 1943, Iona married the love of her life, C.W. (Tubby) Hester. Together, they raised four children and celebrated over 50 years of marriage.
Iona May Hester passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 22, 2017. She is preceded in death by her parents Charles (Bill) and Marie Elliott; her brothers, Billy, Tommy and Charlie Elliott; her husband, Tubby; and her son, Benny Hester. She is survived by her siblings, Johnny (Rose) Elliott, Jamie (Marie) Elliott, Joyce (Dwayne) Merrill, Dorris Hester; children, Bill (Deanna), Bobby and Gaye Hester; eighteen grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to the loving family she created and raised, Iona's life was enriched by her many accomplishments of service in her community. She was inducted as a member of the Eastern Star in 1967. During over 50 years of service in this organization, she served as Worthy Matron, an advisory for the Rainbow Girls, and a DeMolay Mother. Iona Hester was an active member in her church, Calvary Baptist Church, for many years. She also served as a Pink Lady for over 20 years, bringing books and comfort to those in need in the hospitals.
Iona Mae Hester lived with grace. She spent her life inspiring everybody around her through her selflessness and acts of service. Those who knew her know of her loving and supporting nature. Iona's door was always open to anybody in need of a cup of coffee, a piece of bacon, or a listening ear.
