Kirtly Dubose

Kirtly Wayne "Dude" DuBose, retired educator of Skidmore, died on Thursday, November 15, 2012, at the age of 80 in Austin, Texas, after a lengthy illness. He was born November 4, 1932, in Pawnee, Texas to the late Cleo and Lillie DuBose and lived in Bee County for most of his life. He graduated from Pawnee High School in 1950 and Southwest Texas State Teachers College in San Marcos, Texas in 1954. Later, he received a Master's of Education from Texas A&I in Kingsville, Texas in 1969. On May 30, 1954, he married Mavournee Dominy, a marriage that lasted 58 years until his death. He served in the Army in Virginia and Alaska from 1954 to 1956. Upon his discharge he returned to Bee County and began a long relationship with Skidmore-Tynan ISD as a teacher, coach and principal. Although he enjoyed his teaching career and was proud to have been an administrator, he loved his time as a coach. Some of his most joyful moments were spent on the basketball court and at the track with his teams and in later years, reminiscing about those moments. He enjoyed receiving letters and visits from former players and was more proud of his relationships with former players than the recognition he received during his career, such as serving as president of the Texas High School Girls Coaches Association, and after retiring, being named to the Coastal Bend Coaches Association's Hall of Honor in 1998. He was humbled and honored when Skidmore-Tynan ISD put his name on its gym, and was further gratified when S-TISD named its activity center for him and his wife. After retiring, he was a frequent spectator at games all over South Texas and volunteered at local track meets as well as the UIL State Track Meet. Other hobbies included spending time outdoors fishing, hunting, and taking pictures. He greatly enjoyed taking photographs of people's special events: weddings, anniversaries, and quincea�eras. He treasured times spent with his extended family, swapping stories and playing 42 dominoes. In his final years, Wayne appreciated all the visits, phone calls and cards from friends and family, and the support of so many in the Skidmore-Tynan ISD community in ways great and small. He also appreciated the care given by the staff and volunteers at Senior Care of Onion Creek in Austin and Corpus Christi Nursing & Rehab before that. He and his immediate family were especially grateful for the visits and assistance provided during his illness in Austin by his lifelong friend Doylene Hair Hazlett and his niece Elaine DuBose and before that in Corpus Christi by his niece Karen DuBose of Port Aransas,Texas as well as his nephew and niece Leland Wayne and Loree DuBose of Corpus Christi, Texas. Wayne is survived by his wife Mavournee of Austin, Texas; his daughter Jacque (Eric) Kosmin of Dallas, Texas and his son David DuBose of Austin, Texas. He is also survived by his brother Leland's widow Earlann DuBose, numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his siblings and their spouses Jewell (Claude) Galloway, Cleo "Snooks" (Marvin) Forehand, and Leland (Jessie) DuBose. Visitation with the family will be held Friday, November 23, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Galloway and Sons Funeral Home in Beeville, Texas. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, November 24, at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Beeville, Texas with the Rev. Linda Sherry officiating. In celebrating Wayne's life we ask that you consider wearing one of his favorite team's colors/clothes in lieu of traditional black; the Skidmore-Tynan Bobcats' purple and gold, UT Longhorns' burnt orange or the Houston Astros' brick red, black and sand.
