Lafayette Proffitt, Jr.

Lafayette Bates Proffitt, Jr. (L.B.) left this world after 100 years to be with his Lord and his lifetime sweetheart, Velma. He died, Sunday, April 6th at his home with his family around him. He was born on June 10, 1913 in Newcastle, Texas. L.B. was preceded in death by his parents, Fayette and Beulah Jones Proffitt, his wife, Velma Harlow Proffitt, two brothers, Loree Proffitt and wife Kathleen, Brent Proffitt and wife Vaudine, and brothers-in-law, Bill Harlow and wife Dora, and George Elliott. L.B. was an athlete and participated in all sports for the Newcastle Bobcats, graduating in 1931. He loved working with horses and growing up on the banks of the Brazos River. He made a life change when he started working for United Gas Pipeline in Olney, Texas. He and his family were transferred to Pettus in 1952 where he worked for United Gas until he retired in 1977. He was a tireless worker in the Pettus Methodist Church and spent many hours watching the Pettus Eagles. He leaves a legacy of honor and love with his children, Joy Swayze of San Antonio, Sharon (Randy) Andes of Pflugerville, and Johnny (Norma) Proffitt of Pettus. L.B. leaves behind 10 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild. Also surviving him are sisters- in -law, Quata Harlow Elliott and Betty Harlow Hays, cousin, Nita Proffitt Wells, and numerous nieces and nephews. To all of us who loved him, “We will see you again, Granddaddy” The viewing will be at Galloway Funeral Home in Beeville, Texas on Wednesday, April 9th from 6:00 p.m.- 8:00 p.m. A celebration of his life will be held at The Pettus Methodist Church on Thursday, April 10th, at 11 a.m. A memorial service will be held at Lunn Funeral Home in Olney, Texas and graveside will be at Restland Cemetery on Saturday, April 12, 2014. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Pettus Methodist Church, Newcastle Methodist Church, or Pettus Helping Hands.
