Larry Harold Gilmore, 78, of Stonewall, Texas, was a caring father, grandfather and friend. He passed away Thursday, April 22, 2021 in San Antonio after a courageous battle with illness.
Larry was born November 6, 1942, to Floyd and Betty Gilmore in Davenport, Iowa. After graduating high school, he moved to south Texas where his love for fishing began. He opened a barber shop in George West, Texas serving clients, young and old, before entering the oil and gas industry as a sales representative for more than 35 years. He enjoyed supporting his kids at track meets, football, basketball, volleyball and baseball games. He also found enjoyment serving as a Little League umpire, where he was known for adding his personal flair while umpiring games. Later in life, he found delight in playing golf, working in the yard, following the stock market, and enjoying the company of his loyal dogs.
Larry had a unique ability to be no-nonsense and humorous, and he routinely handled life’s difficulties with a smile and void of self-pity.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Betty (Carrigan) Gilmore; first wife, Marilyn Gilmore; and numerous aunts and uncles.
He is survived by Dale Baker with whom he shared a union of love for 32 years; ex-wife and friend, Laura Gilmore; sons, David (Elisa) Gilmore, Scott Gilmore and John Gilmore; daughter, Carol Anne (Brett) Sowell; grandsons, Sullivan Sowell and Luke Gilmore; granddaughters, Carrigan Sowell and Ella Gilmore; and Dale’s children, Leonard Denton and family and Charlotte Thomas and family; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 27, at Galloway & Sons Chapel in George West followed by the funeral service at 10 o’clock. Burial will follow in the Three Rivers Cemetery.
The family asks in lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Larry’s memory to JDRF or the American Diabetes Association.
