L.R. Hollingsworth Jr., 87, of Beeville, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2010. Mr. Hollingsworth was born to Louis Robert Hollingsworth Sr. and Martha Eleanor Campbell in the Rio Grande Valley on Nov. 5, 1922. He married Cecelia Anne Boyd of Dallas on April 28, 1956. He was educated in the public schools of Harlingen and attended Southern Methodist University, majoring in finance and accounting. While there, he was a member of Kappa Sigma and Alpha Kappa Psi. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1943-1946 and took part in several invasions in the Pacific Theater of Operations and also in the occupation of Japan. After the war, he returned to SMU, receiving a BBA degree in January 1947. He worked in fields of ranching and banking and returned to active duty in the Navy during the Korean Conflict, serving from 1950 through 1951. After his release as a full lieutenant, he worked in banking and bank examination fields until 1955. He settled in Beeville in 1955, and worked in the accounting department of a local oil company. In 1966, he became the Bee County auditor and remained in that position until his retirement in 1986. He was vestryman, treasurer and senior warden of St. Philip's Episcopal Church, president of Beeville Rotary and president of Glenwood-St. Joseph's Cemetery Foundation of Beeville. He served in several offices of the Texas Association of County Auditors and was their president in 1982-1983. His hobbies included the study of genealogy, gardening and reading. Survivors include his wife, Cecelia Hollingsworth; three children, Mary Anne Groda of Beeville, Jane Elizabeth Bourne of Austin and Rob Hollingsworth of Washington, D.C.; three grandchildren, Kris Groda, Bobby and David Hollingsworth; and three great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. at Galloway & Sons Funeral Home. A private family service will be held on Friday.
