Margaret Stevens

Margaret "Mickey" Parish Stevens, long time Mineral resident, died in Robert Lee, Texas at the age of 93 on October 24, 2016. Mickey is survived by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and their spouses: Margaret "Mimzi" married to Jerry Horn with sons Wes (married to Rebecca Stewart with children Caleb, Noah, and Gideon) and Russ (married to Heather Grey with children Rylee, Avery, and Zane); Richard married to Anita "Skeeter" O'Hair with children Jill (married to Mateo Winfree with son Joshua) and Grant; and James "Jim" (married to Karen Newhook with son David). Mickey was born May 19, 1923 in Eufaula, Oklahoma to James "Jim" and Jewel Burton Parish. Her mother died in 1929 and she lived with her aunt until her father remarried to Marion Marshall and moved the family to Taft, Texas where she graduated from Taft high school. Mickey married T.R. "Dick" Stevens on July 15, 1945. They moved to Edna, Texas where they owned a mattress factory and furniture company. They sold it to come to Mineral and start farming during the 1950s drought. They were married for 52 years until Dick died in 1997. She continued to live at Mineral until moving to Robert Lee in 2004. In the 1960s, Mickey went back to Southwest Texas State Teachers College in San Marcos, Texas and finished her Bachelor and Master Education degrees. She then taught for 25 years - first at Pawnee and then at Pettus. She taught a variety of classes, but enjoyed teaching Kindergarten most. While living at Mineral, Mickey was a member of Adams Street Church of Christ in Beeville, where she was a bible school teacher, and while living at Robert Lee she was a member of Southside Church of Christ. Mickey started painting in the early 1970s, taking art lessons from Simon Michael. She painted a wide variety of subjects, from still life, to wild flowers, to wild animals. But most of her pictures are colorful landscapes -- ranging from the local seashores and brush country of the Texas Coastal Bend to the mountains and deserts of the Texas Trans-Pecos. She was buried at Mineral Cemetery in the Stevens plot next to Dick on October 27, 2016. Wes Horn, her grandson, officiated the ceremony. Memorial donations may be made in her name to Medina Children's Home (also known as Arms of Hope) at https://community.armsofhope.org/general-donation-form.
