Mary Bussey

Mary Jane Bussey, 99, died peacefully July 19th. She was born in Beeville on June 11, 1912. She graduated Spohn Nursing School and became an RN. She practiced in Corpus Christi until her retirement to live on the lake at Mathis. For the last 6 years she has lived in Wimberley and San Marcos under the loving care of her nephew Scott Adkins and his wife Dara. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hobson, her parents Lock and Mary Claire (Teal) Adkins, sister Hilda, brothers Teal and Bob, and nephew Pat, all of Beeville. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Jo Adkins (Teal) of Beeville, nieces Joan (Adkins) Reilly and Melissa (Adkins) Miller, nephews Scott (Dara), Tom (Tinka), and Michael Adkins, and many beloved great- nieces and nephews. She practiced at Spohn Memorial Hospital in Corpus Christi, where she worked valiantly with polio victims during that horrible epidemic, and was much sought-after for her life-saving care of pneumonia patients, when the greatest hope for their survival was only excellent nursing care. She later entered private practice, working with terminally injured patients whom required long-term, around-the-clock care. Auntie Mary, as she was lovingly known to her family, loved life, her church, her family, and good food. She was an avid bridge player and until the end could beat anyone with whom she played ANY card game. She followed the Astros, Spurs, and Cowboys and enjoyed life. She was known for her great sense of humor and crazy food concoctions. Her family will miss her greatly. A devout Catholic, over the years, she was a dedicated member of St. Joseph's (Beeville), Christ the King (Corpus), and Sacred Heart (Mathis) parishes. Visitation at Galloway Funeral Home is Friday 6p-9p with Rosary at 8:00. Funeral on Saturday at 11 am at St. Joseph's Catholic Church followed by interment at Glenwood Cemetery.
