Mavournee Dominy DuBose, retired educator of Skidmore, died on Sunday, December 10, 2017, at the age of 83 in Austin, Texas after a lengthy illness.
A lifelong Texan, she was born September 20, 1934 in Temple to the late Myrtis Alexander and William Winfield Dominy, Sr. She graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1951 and Southwest Texas State Teachers College in San Marcos in 1954. On May 30, 1954, she married Wayne DuBose, a marriage that lasted 58 years until his death in November 2012. In 1969, she received a Master's of Education from Texas A&I in Kingsville and in 1985, a Master's of Science in Library and Information Science from the University of Texas at Austin. Mavournee taught in Pawnee, Tx., and Warwick, Va., before spending the bulk of her 46-year career in Skidmore-Tynan ISD as an English and Language Arts teacher, a One Act Play director, a UIL literary coach, and a librarian.
Mavournee enjoyed working with dedicated students who shared her love of literature, and helped instill proper spelling and grammar into generations of South Bee County youths whether they liked it or not. Many students wrote years later to thank her for imparting language skills that helped advance their careers. She was one of the first South Texas school librarians to computerize book checkout procedures. Although at heart an introvert who loved nothing more than curling up with a book or a crossword puzzle, Mavournee silenced many rowdy classrooms with a raised eyebrow, danced and sang for her play casts, and made time for students who needed her help.
She loved to travel, touring North America with her family, and for several summers met across Texas with the "Six-Pack" of college friends. She returned often to New York theaters and museums and enjoyed educational trips to China, England, France, and Germany.
In her final years, Mavournee appreciated all the visits, phone calls and cards from friends and family as well as the care given by Hill Country Care Providers, Belmont Village and Halcyon Hospice in Austin.
Mavournee is survived by her daughter Jacque (Eric) Kosmin of Dallas, Texas and her son David DuBose of Austin, Texas. She is also survived by her stepmother Marge Dominy of Temple, Texas; half-sister Edla (Walter) Wilde of Temple, Texas; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her siblings and their spouses, Bill (Jen) Dominy; Don (Bernice) Dominy and Rosie (Lloyd) Rust.
Visitation with the family will be held Friday, January 12, 2018 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Galloway and Sons Funeral Home in Beeville, Texas. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Galloway & Sons Funeral Home in Beeville, Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Texas Interscholastic League Foundation will help endow a scholarship in her name (TILF, PO Box 151027, Austin, TX 78715 or online at http://www.tilfoundation.org).
