Mamye Ruth (Brashear) Nelson, 82, of Beeville, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011. Mrs. Nelson was born July 10, 1928, in Mineral to Henry and Leona (Harris) Brashear. She married Bascom McTyre Nelson in Mineral in 1958. She received a bachelor of science degree from the University of Texas and was a lifetime teacher, working at Pettus ISD and Pawnee ISD. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Pettus, the Methodist Women's group, Adult Literacy Council and the Texas State Teachers Association. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bascom Nelson on Aug. 18, 1991; two sisters, Edna Betley and Ethel Brashear; and two brothers, Henry R. Brashear and Homer Brashear. Survivors include a daughter, Susan L. (Nelson) Smedley of Beeville; a sister, Florence Donald of Reston, La.; and a grandson, Joshua Thomas Smedley of Beeville. Visitation was held from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Galloway & Sons Chapel. The funeral service was conducted there Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock with Rev. Eric Tarver and Rev. Carolyn Chandler officiating. Organist Roy Cox and soloist Don Nelson provided musical selections. Burial followed in Mineral Cemetery.
