Paula Estelle Hopson Duffy, 73, passed away on April 29, 2016. She was born on September 14, 1942, in Tyler, Texas to Paul and Estelle (Dabney) Hopson. Paula called Beeville home from 1964 until her death. She worked first as a preschool teacher at First United Methodist Church, then moved to A.C. Jones High School, where she taught English and later led the Gifted and Talented program. She left teaching to assume the role of Director of the Joe Barnhart Scholarship Foundation. She served as Director from 1997 to 2015, and Director Emeritus from 2015 to present. Paula was active in her community, serving in numerous organizations to include Mother's Club, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, Parent Teacher Association, BISD School Board of Trustees, several committees at First United Methodist Church, Adult Literacy Council and Coastal Bend Advisory Board. She was preceded in death by her parents; and sisters, Peggy Summers and Kaye Eben. She is survived by her son, Bryan (Mary Katherine) Duffy of Harlingen; daughter, Georgia (Kevin) Helmrick of San Antonio; grandchildren, Clara Duffy, Hayes Duffy, Will Helmrick and Joseph Helmrick; nieces and nephew, Laurie Humberson, Lori (Rudy) Leal, Cristi (TJ) Till, David Eben and Keri (Rob )Wilson. The family wishes to acknowledge with deepest appreciation the team of caregivers who cared for Paula lovingly and tirelessly in her home until her death. Your presence was a tremendous comfort to her and her family. The family also wishes to thank Exclusive Home Health and Hospice, Inc. for their supportive care. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 6, 2016, at Galloway & Sons Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 7, 2016, at First United Methodist Church. Entombment will follow at Beeville Memorial Park. Family and friends may gather afterward for lunch at First United Methodist Church. Pallbearers will be Scott Bond, Brannon Brooke, Alex May, Bobby Schauer, George Duffy, and Hayes Duffy. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Paula's honor to the Joe Barnhart Bee County Library.
