Philip Stambaugh, 74, of Beeville, Texas, passed away on March 29, 2024.
Philip was born in Cleveland, Ohio, to Ernest Dean Stambaugh and Vondella Pearl (Mills) Stambaugh on September 18, 1949. He graduated from North Ridgeville High School in North Ridgeville, Ohio. Philip served in the U.S. Army between 1968 and 1974. During this time, he completed two tours in Vietnam and was awarded a Bronze Star Medal, Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Medal with 21 Oak Leaf Clusters, Vietnam Commendation with Oak Leaf Cluster and Army Conduct Medal. Philip worked as a captain for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice for 24 years.
On December 5, 1980, in Waco, Texas, he married the love of his life, Elizabeth Catherine Gilmore. Those who knew Philip would describe him as serious and stern, but also compassionate; he loved his family with a full heart. Some of his favorite pastimes included fishing, wood crafting, welding, building things, using his tractor/mowers, and anything that included working with his hands.
Philip is preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Vondella Stambaugh; brothers, Perry and Patrick Stambaugh; and sister, Phyllis Dajnowski.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Stambaugh; children, Jason Dean Stambaugh, James C. Puryear, Jessica E. (Adam) Mercer and Meghan A. (Roger) Hernandez; grandchildren, Joshua and Miles Stambaugh, Troy, Madyson and James D. Puryear and Willow and Carter Mercer; and brother, Ernest (LeeEtta) Stambaugh, Jr. Philip also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews and cousins to cherish his memory.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday, April 4, 2024, at Galloway & Sons Funeral Home in Beeville followed by the funeral service at 6 o’clock that evening.
An inurnment ceremony with military honors will be held at Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery in Corpus Christi at 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 11.
