Rosa Lee Hirst My Sou Tex.Com 16 days ago | 472 views | 0 | | 4 | | Rosa Lee Hirst, a Beeville resident for more than 73 years, died at Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital in Corpus Christi on November 2, 2010, at the age of 102 years. She had resided at her long-time home in Orangedale until a few days before her death. Services were held at First United Methodist Church of Beeville at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 6th, with visitation at the Church beginning at 10:00 a.m. immediately before the service. Interment followed at Glenwood Cemetery. Mrs. Hirst originally came to Beeville from her hometown of Yoakum, Texas in 1930, when she met her future husband, Alton B. Hirst. She became a permanent resident of the Beeville community in 1937. She was the widow of the late Alton B. "Curley" Hirst, who was a beloved and long-time resident of Beeville. They were married in San Antonio, Texas in 1940. Mrs. Hirst was born in Yoakum, Texas, on April 14, 1908, to John H. Cannan and Ida Marie Volp Cannan. She had two sisters, the late Bertha Cannan Lansberry and the late Melba Cannan Crutchfield. She was the great-granddaughter of William Jarvis Cannan, the patriarch of a Texas pioneer family, who settled near Brazoria, Texas in 1835 when Texas was a part of Mexico, and fought at the Battle for Texas Independence at San Jacinto on April 21, 1836. Mrs. Hirst was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church of Beeville, where she had been a member of the congregation since 1942. Mrs. Hirst was named as Bee County's Outstanding Senior Citizen@ in 1992, at the annual GrayFest celebration in Corpus Christi. Although she and her husband had no children, she had been a singularly favorite aunt to countless nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews as well as their respective spouses. She is survived by her nieces, Margaret Crutchfield Lipps and Carolyn Lansberry Fletcher; her nephews, C. C. Crutchfield, Jr., John R. Crutchfield and Thomas Sowell; her great nieces Kelly Sowell, Barbara Flowers, Kathryn Schneider and Lisa Pollard; her great nephews, Thomas Sowell III, Max Sowell, Randall A. Lipps, Gary M. Lipps, Scott C. Crutchfield, Barry C. Crutchfield, Ricky Pollard; and numerous great-great nieces and nephews. Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church of Beeville.
