Velma Curry Anderson Fregia passed to be with the Lord on June 4, 2019 at 95 years. Velma was born January 17, 1924 in Ranger, Texas, to Frank Curry and Eva Stone Curry and spent most of her early days in Haskell, Texas, until the family moved to Three Rivers, Texas, in 1937. After graduation from Three Rivers High School, Velma attended Howard Payne College in Brownwood, Texas, for a year and a half before meeting Quinton Anderson, a young soldier from Mississippi whom she married in 1942. During the next ten years, Army life took them to Mississippi, Tennessee, New Jersey and back to Texas. After Quinton's return from Korea in 1952, the family established its home in Three Rivers.
Velma attended Texas A&I College (now Texas A&M Kingsville) part-time until she earned her degree in education. In addition to summer sessions, Velma commuted from Three Rivers to Kingsville 108 Saturdays to attend classes. She went on to teach for the next 31 years in Three Rivers and George West, Texas. Velma was active in numerous community and school organizations where she volunteered her time generously.
Velma loved to travel and did so throughout the U.S. and Europe. Up until her last day, Velma could recall every trip, who she was with and what they did. Most of her travels were with Louise Mohan, her best friend since they were eight years old.
Velma was preceded in death by her husband, Quinton, who passed away in 1977 after almost 35 years together. She married Lester Fregia in 1988 and they traveled together for eight years until he passed away in 1996.
Velma moved to Lake Jackson, TX, in 2005 where she quickly adapted to her new life at Carriage Inn. She especially enjoyed the new and interesting friends she made there. Between outings, Velma could be found playing cards and Mahjong or devouring 2-3 books a week, mostly about women who were pivotal in history.
Velma was a kind, generous and compassionate woman who always found the best in others. She was proud that she accepted Christ as her Savior when she was ten and there is no doubt, she lived a Christian life. Velma was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Three Rivers, TX for over 60 years.
Velma is survived by her son, Quinton Anderson, Jr. (Lee) of Sugar Land, TX; her daughter, Linda Anderson Howe, (John) of New Braunfels, TX; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and one step-son, Linden Fregia (Barb) of Lansdale, PA. Velma's sister, Loreta Bridges, resides in Garland, TX. Velma's brother, Charles Curry, predeceased her.
